"La Viulca" Housing System

Images in this profile clearly show that this unusual, imaginative design is in fact a very practical, well thought out response to a critical need for good, low cost housing. The lightweight, modular system is quick to erect and has the advantage that it can be used on practically all types of terrain without needing design modifications. Forces in the structure are carried down through the hollow structural steel portal frame to just a few bearing points, giving enormous cost savings in excavation and foundation works, and freeing up space outside at ground level. Clever use is made of the steel frame to carry lines and pipes for the building's installations, and also for use as a fixing point for drainpipes and ventilation ducts.
