JAPANAs Tokyo's gateway to the sea, the Harumi ferry terminal is both city landmark and a functional port, coping with up to 1500 passengers at a time. Close to Tokyo's waterside park, the complex integrates into city life through the provision of restaurants, a gallery and an observatory. The architecture of the nine story main building, with its pyramid shaped cap, takes full advantage of steel's expressive qualities, creating a focal point visible from land and sea. The pyramid is a hollow steel lattice structure covering the seventh to ninth floors, which are supported by a rigid, lightweight tubular frame.
