Steel House in Rekem

The building site is located in a marsh and drainage area where, in winter, the water table can be very high. Waterproofing of the foundation for the steel structure was effected by a concrete box that floats in the marsh subsoil. The steel construction consists of three individual elements: the long building on the south side housing the living realm; a smaller cubic building on the north side that houses the sleeping realm and a porch cum carport structure which is connected to the entrance by a stainless steel ramp. Upper floors and roof are accessible via a cylindrical staircase. The steel frame is infilled with different kinds of panels: glass panels, sandwich panels, and aluminium panels that serve as shutters. All components have a clear white colour. Floors, however, are made in a traditional way with wooden joists placed in I sections, insulated ceilings and wooden floor panels.
