High strength steel for buildings and bridges

High Strength Steel (HSS), among the many improved performance steels developed, has long been available for many types of industrial products and applications such as pressure vessels, towers, pipelines, machinery and tools. Only recently HSS has been used as a structural material for building construction and civil engineering. Increasingly, HSS is being adopted for construction of buildings, bridges, and offshore platforms because it offers outstanding advantages for the following:
  • Construction of high-rise buildings
  • Construction of buildings with fewer columns and longer spans for increased rentable (lettable) area.
  • Construction of buildings more resistant to seismic and wind loads
  • Increased architectural options with lighter and stronger elements and frames
  • Simplification of handling, fabrication and erection
  • Development of new construction methods
Overall, HSS results in the more economic construction of buildings and bridges.
