The rugged qualities of the steel panelled facade recall the steel maufacturing heritage of Pittsburgh. On the north facade, where the fenestration is limited by laboratories that require solid walls for storage and equipment, elements such as decorative steel grilles add scale. The rigidity of the steel clad north facade, drawing inspiration from steel mill buildings, gives way to a rich play of surface textures on the sides of the building where two corrugated steel stair towers thrust outward. South facing offices are screened by steel supported shades, while smooth and corrugated steel panels dovetail on the east facade.
